A Snapshot of June

We are not generally schedule people but, early on in lockdown, we created a (very) rough schedule for our week, hoping that we could (sometimes) remember what day of the week it was.

It looked something like this:

Sunday: Online church & breakfast for dinner
Monday: Dr. Pepper Floats
Tuesday: Board Game Night
Wednesday: Fruit Smoothies
Thursday: Ice Cream Sundaes
Friday: Movie Night
Saturday: Pizza Night

(You can tell we never eat treats, right?!)

June feels like it was mostly that schedule on repeat, with little else in between. Add a few bike rides, a few family visits and some playing in the sprinkler and that’s been, more or less, our month.

The kids are getting bored (and fighting a lot). We’re all missing friends. Despite what feels like endless cleaning, if you look closely at pretty much anything around here, you will most certainly find a mess. Everyone is a little more worn out.

But the schedule has created just enough structure to the week without me feeling controlled and overwhelmed by having to fit in something else. It’s reinforced for me that, while a detailed schedule feels stifling for us, some structure is essential.

It’s been wonderful to have at least something to say to the inevitable “What are we going to do today?” questions.

And the number of times it’s helped me answer a (very important) question along the lines of “Did I wash my hair on movie night day or ice cream sundae day?” has been astonishing.

I really thought the novelty would wear off but the kids still check it every day. (Maybe the sugar is a bit of a motivator.)

And, in between the treats, there has still been room for a little magic.

We finished school for the summer.

We tried dragonfruit for the first time.

We transformed a tiny corner of our little backyard into a very basic and open ended (and very affectionately named) “play area.” Lots of wet and muddy fun has been had!

We jumped on the tie dye band wagon and made some fun t-shirts.

We found a five leaf clover!

And even though we’re only in semi-lockdown mode heading into the summer, I think we’ll turn the lockdown schedule into a summer schedule.
